It’s so easy to get wrapped up in preparing for an interview, getting all those notes into your head, and rehearsing what you are going to say, that it’s easy to forget about the interviewer as a person.

I have heard more than once from interviewers that they are looking for a conversation. They want to be engaged by you. If you just rattle off your accomplishments and desires, always thinking about what you are going to say and not thinking about the interviewer as a person, you will alienate them.

Make a conversation. And to do that, you must pay a bit of

attention to your interviewer.

It doesn’t matter how “right” your answers are if you don’t engage the interviewer and sell them on you as a person. Even if they seem like a robot, maybe especially if they seem like a robot, you have to use your people skills. The interviewer may be dead tired, or may have had a fight with their husband or wife. In that case, you are just another applicant- one in a blur of many. You have to snap these interviewers out of it. Ask them about themsleves after you finish answering a question. Tell a little joke (if you’re good at this). Heck, even slipping on a polished floor and landing flat on your butt is a good way to break the ice. (A great way, in fact.)

Most interviewers will really put a lot of thought into the interview process and try to determine, in spite of your answers, whether or not they think you’ll be a good fit for their program. Because of this, some admissions people will allow you in even if your answers weren’t the best, but because they saw something special in you.

Conversely, some will reject you because they felt you had no real conviction behind your answers. It is up to you to engage them in conversation and make them believers.

Some interviewers sound like lonely housewives when they complain about the lack of any conversation with an applicant. They don’t want answers that sound as though they have been memorized. They don’t want an endless recital of achievements. And they certainly don’t want silence.

They want conversation. They want to find out about you as a person. They want to get a real feeling about whether you belong in their MBA program or not.

So, no matter how impressive your recital is, it’s often worthless if you don’t engage the interviewer.

A few tips:

1- If you’re nervous, just say so. It always releases the tension.

2- Don’t forget to smile!

3- Ask a question or two about the interviewer. How long have they been at this school? How many students to they have to interview each day? Try to bring down the walls between you.

4- If you’re good at being humorous, give it a try. Just be careful of not causing offense.

5- Pause when you speak. Use some of your time to engage them in conversation, and they’ll remember you better for it.

None of these rules are very difficult, but you may forget the basic rules of socializing because you are nervous. Take the time to remember them. Breath deeply. And smile.

MBA Interview - Why You Must Visit the School Before the Interview Day

There is one, simple way to get to know the business school you are interviewing for. It’s both easy and highly effective.

Visit it.

You will gain more in a day of wandering around the campus and talking to people than you could in weeks of online research.

A lot of students skip this because they think it isn’t all that important. Who’s going to know they were even there? Well, this line of thought can cost you your ticket to the MBA program.

For starters, you’re going to get a lot more information about the school from visiting it personally than you’re ever going to get out of a brochure. You might actually find, once you’ve visited the campus, that this particular school isn’t as appealing as you thought, or conversely, much better then expected.

Nothing beats actually physically checking out the school. You can look at bulletin board notices and school fliers. you can steep yourself in the atmosphere. Eat lunch with the other students, and try to imagine yourself as a student there.

Another thing you can do when visiting a school is speak to the students who go there. How better to get an idea of how good the place is other than speaking to those who live and breathe it? Sure, you have to take everything you hear with a grain of salt. Those who like it will make it sound like heaven. Those who don’t like it will make it sound like hell on earth. The key is putting everything into perspective and weighing all the comments collectively. Read between the lines. If they don’t like it, ask why. If they like it, ask why. Also ask about what the school expects from them, what are the values that are particular to that school. You can even ask about their experience in the MBA interview themselves. Their advice might be invaluable.

Also, you’ll want to meet with some of the professors, especially the ones who are in the MBA program itself. This will do two things. First, it will give you a pretty good idea of what to expect from them. There is nothing worse than walking into a classroom cold. This way, you’ll start with a familiar face. Second, it will show these professors that you have a genuine interest. As I said, not every prospective student takes the time to visit schools. This one activity will set you apart from all the other applicants. You can make an impression, and there is no telling how that may play out behind the scenes for you. On top of that, you can be pretty sure that what the professor describes as being important at that school will be reflected in the interview. You will be a little less likely to be surprised by an unexpected interview question.

Finally, and this is probably the most important reason of all, when you write your essay for admission as to why you want to go there, you can actually speak about the school with some feeling. You’ve been there. You can actually talk about what you liked while visiting. Takes notes during your visit, and review them afterward. Imagine talking about them during the interview. You’ll be on your way.

Brad is a laid back guy, he likes to watch football and relax at home with a beer, a salami pizza and a smoke. He’s got his eyes set on this 6 foot tall fashion model (let’s call her Angelina) who is a vegan, active in politics, hates TV and male sports, and socializes at fashionable events every week. What do you think the chances are that he’s going to catch her eye? And if he does, how happy do you think the two of them will be in the long run, especially when she’s never home because she’s out running around all the time and he prefers to stay home?

Silly analogy, but you get the point. No matter how badly we might want something, sometimes what we want is just the wrong fit for us. That can be just as true about the MBA program we’re thinking of getting into.

Not all schools are the same. Each one has a different atmosphere. Sometimes they have dramatically different atmospheres. The curriculums might be similar, but the professors teaching those curriculums are going to make a huge difference in how well you do and how much you enjoy your classes. If you don’t fit into the culture of that business school, you are going to have a very tough go at it. And, you’ll probably be miserable.

I know one guy who always wanted to work a certain large law firm. He finally got an interview and landed the job. After 6 months, he quit. Why? He hated it there. In spite of the reputation of the firm, he found that the the atmosphere just didn’t sit well with him. He ended up taking a job with a smaller firm, and stayed there happily for years. He made slightly less money, but he would have certainly burned out at the other firm and either quit or gotten fired. Then, where would he have been?

When you meet with an admissions officer, they’re looking for somebody who is going to compliment the school. And believe me, they can usually tell when somebody isn’t going to be the right fit based on the questions they ask and the answers you give. This, in fact, is one of the key things they look for in an interview. If you know what the school values are, you might be able to fake it. But you would be doing yourself a big disservice. You just might end up getting your wish, being admitted…. and regretting it.

If you go to a school that really isn’t a fit for you, you’re not going to connect with the classes, professors or students, which is ultimately going to lead to an unhappy time, poor grades and possibly even to dropping out.

So, make sure the school you want to attend is the right fit for you. The best way to do this is to visit, and talk to students and professors. This will give you something you could never get by reading about the school. You’ll get a feeling for it, and instinctively know if it’s the right fit for you. If you decide you like it, you will be able to talk comfortably about why during your interview. In fact, that will be the easiest part of the interview, and your enthusiasm will naturally shine through.

Lastly, don’t worry about what anyone else says about which school is best. Only you can decide that. If you let others influence your decision, it may turn out to be a huge mistake.

Maybe you don’t really want to lie. Most people don’t. But the pressure is on, you’re given a tough question, you’re sweating, and a silence falls between you and the interviewer after they ask the fateful question. You panic, and the lie just comes out. It’s just a little lie, and it covered something that might sink your chances. Where’s the harm?

Here’s the harm.

A lie is like an unexploded bomb. Several lies are like a minefield. And the thing is, one lie often necessitates a bunch of others. They are spread out all over the place, and you will not always remember where they are, or who you told them to. Eventually, you’ll step on one…kaboom. Goodbye, MBA program.

If I were to ask you for your name, address and phone number, you would hardly have to think in order to give me the answers. Why? Because they are facts, of course.

Now, imagine you had an alias with a phony address and phony telephone number. You’d have to make a conscientious effort to remember those things because they are not really a part of your real life. It would be easy to stumble over your delivery.

Worse, you might say, for example, that you live in Miami. And the later on you might mention how you love to go snowboarding every weekend. The interview will catch that. Now, you have to make a bigger lie to cover the first.

You have to say that you fly north every weekend, like some rich kid. Or you have to say you have a cabin in Vermont. Then later, you may have to explain how you get to Vermont, and where the cabin is. It can all get very complicated very quickly.

The more lies you have to remember, the greater the chance of slipping up somewhere along the interview process.

Some questions might refer back to other questions and if you don’t have your lies down really pat, you’re sunk. On top of that, some MBA interviewers like to review your application and essays after the interview… specifically to look for inconsistencies with what you said to them - like detectives.

Now, having said that, there are ways to tell the truth without having to say anything negative about yourself

should you be asked a question that would require a less than positive answer. For example, let’s say you were asked if you ever had a job in an office and you hadn’t. You could say something like, “No, but I did have office training from XYZ company when I was staying with my uncle over the summer. They showed me around and taught me some office procedures like filing and answering phones. So while I never actually worked there, I do understand those jobs and feel very confident that I can perform them if I had to.”

See how easy that is? What you want to do, when asked any question, is downplay the negative and accentuate the positive. Don’t worry, the interviewer will know you’re doing this but that’s what they want to see…somebody who looks at the positive side of things and presents their strengths instead of their weaknesses. They don’t want somebody to simply answer “No” and then look down at their shoes because they feel like a failure because of it.

Don’t lie…but simply qualify those negative answers with something positive.

Worst case, just confess. If something looks bad on your resume, talk about what a disaster it was. Tell the interviewer you really screwed up there. Then go on to say how it taught you a valuable lesson, and what specifically you have done to make sure it will never happen again.

Look at it as a chance to impress your interviewer. That black mark can sometimes be turned into a selling point this way. Take it head on. Everyone has made mistakes, and most people are impressed by those who can admit their mistakes, learn from them and take moves to correct them.

On the other hand, if you try to cover up, they can often smell it - even if they can’t prove.

So make the right decision here.

Interviewers love quiet confidence.

Interviewers hate overbearing applicants.

Interviewers will reject overly humble applicants as lacking.

How do you walk the fine line between confident and overbearing, or even desperate?

The people who will interview you are pros. They have seen it all. They can tell the posers from the real thing. If you go in there and try to fluff them with fake bravado, you will look foolish. Rather than confident, you will seem annoying. Too much talk about “me, me, me” even can seem desperate. At best, you will get sympathy. At worst, they will never ever want to see you again.

It’s worth remembering that most times people talk too fast, they come off as nervous and unimpressive. It’s important that you find the balance.

So try this…

First, don’t talk too fast. Too many students try to get in as much information about themselves in record time in order to impress the interviewer. This is one of the fist signs of desperation and it will doom you right from the start. Besides, you will bore the interviewer and they will start to tune out. You’ll sound like a robot.

You really want to keep their attention, and nothing helps to do that like pausing for an occasional breath. Speak slowly and clearly. (And, of course, breath.)

Don’t try to cram every little thing you’ve ever done into your interview. Get the important stuff in, but leave time to convey your personality. Unless it’s a blind interview (one done without your application in front of them), they will already have the basic facts and figures of your background.

And don’t tell the interviewer that you’ve dreamt of getting into this school since you’ve been in diapers. It’s not going to wash, unless you’ve actually have been wearing diapers recently. And you’d be better off not telling them that!

Seriously, they will see right through this approach. By all means, let them know that you are excited and eager about entering their school, but keep it real.

This should be obvious, but don’t beg and don’t get all emotional saying that if you don’t get into this school your life is over. It isn’t over, they know it, and you’ll only come off as being desperate, if not a bit imbalanced. Besides, you want them to see you as a winner - and a winner will succeed no matter how many times they are rejected. That’s MBA material.

Talk smoothly, and don’t be afraid to pause and have a moment of silence. Silence can be very effective to let them soak in a bit of what you’ve said. Of course, don’t be too silent, though!

You do want to speak with confidence but not be too cocky. This can be a hard one for younger people to pull off. They usually go to one extreme or the other. Either they’re too humble or they come off as a total jerk. Find a balance.

If you can, do a mock interview with an older person. They can really point out things you might not notice yourself, even with video.

How you handle yourself during the interview in this area is going to make a big difference. So practice your interview skills… and be prepared.

Some people may have the idea that building a website is a painstaking task for novices especially upon hearing technical names like Dreamweaver. However, what they don’t realize is that there are steps you can follow that even beginners in the web designing field can learn immediately. Learning how to build a website using Dreamweaver is not difficult if you have easy to remember steps you can follow.

Dreamweaver is a very handy tool for both novices and web professionals. It supports various web technologies and other server-side scripting languages. You can use it as a stand-alone software program or use it along with other web designing tools.

To get you started on how to build a website using Dreamweaver, here’s what you should do:

Step 1 – Install the Dreamweaver program on your computer. Once the program is properly installed, open the program to start using. Begin by clicking on file and then select new from the drop-down menu. A pop-up window will be seen that would ask you what type of website you want to create. Click on “Basic Page” then click on “Create.” This will now be your opening page.

Step 2 – You may save this file by clicking on File and selecting “Save As” from the drop-down menu. Create a folder with the name “index.htm” which will then contain all the files to be uploaded on this page. Save your opening page using the filename “index.htm” in the same folder.

Step 3 – Now you may begin building your website. You may start by typing the title at the upper middle side of the page. Highlight the title and choose the color, font and size that you want to use.

Step 4 – Fill your website with whatever you want to appear on your site. Your contents should be pleasing to look at and should be fun, informative and relevant to your target viewers. Again, you may change the style of your text by clicking on Window and then Properties.

Step 5 – You can make use of the toolbar to make alterations to the visual effects of your website. You may add background color that is complimentary to your text as well as create links to other websites. Then, repeat the same process with other alterations and additions you would like to perform on your site.

Step 6 – Add some pictures to liven up the image of your website. Save these image files on the same folder where you saved the webpage, “index.htm.”

Step 7 – To make your website searchable through the search engines, you must create metatags. To do this, first click on “insert” and then select “head.” When you see “description,” click on it and type a description of your site. Use the same procedure to start adding keywords or key phrases. Make sure you add comma and single space after each keyword to separate them from each other.

As you can see, the process on how to build a website using Dreamweaver is really not that difficult. Just make sure to save your file after performing each step and your website will be all set and ready to be uploaded on the internet.

Use your creativity and imagination to brainstorm the best way to design your website. It is important that you also take note of what content you will put in, the color scheme you would like to use and the overall purpose of why you want to establish your own site. You’ll find out that it will be easier for you to work on the website since you basically have the blueprint to the site you are trying to build.

Tip # 2 – Select a web hosting service. There are both free and paid web hosting services in the internet today. Free web hosting may be okay when you are starting out. However, you can expect the host to post ads that you may not want on your website. Just remember to take note of your budget for this as well as the necessary services you will be requiring from your host.

Tip # 3 – Choose a web design program that is not complicated for beginners like you. You can search online for the best software to use. There are actually free software programs you can download just to help you get started in designing your very own website. Once you get the hang of these simple software programs, then you can proceed using more complicated tools.

Tip # 4 – Upload photos, videos and other interesting content in your website. Remember that a website is not successful if you don’t have visitors that regularly view your site. To gain more visitors and traffic to your site, you must put in some interesting content for others to see. This is how your planning can help you expedite the process more smoothly. With your earlier planning, you can then already think of eye-catching content that could perk the interest of internet surfers all over the world.

What makes up a great website? Usually, people would answer by saying that they find a website interesting if they have some relevant content. Others who are more visual would say they are attracted by great looking pictures, interesting videos and moving objects flashing across their screens when they open the website. The truth is that more often than not, the initial attraction to a website would be the visual stuff that grabs attention and subtly commands the viewer to keep on looking. If you want to accomplish these things with your website, all you have to do is to know how to build a website with adobe tools.

Here are some tips to help get you started with your website using adobe tools:

Tool # 1 – Adobe Illustrator

Adobe Illustrator is actually great for creating logos and establishing a distinct brand in your website. You can create vector graphics and even draw using this program. With Adobe Illustrator, you are not limited to just ready-made images. You can create specific images with new dimensions, color scheme and create new shapes that will create a distinct look for your website. This is very important for every business or individual who would like to make a mark in the online world.

Tool # 2 – Adobe Photoshop

Adobe Photoshop is great for manipulating images. All you have to do is save the image files on your computer and open them through your Photoshop software. There are tools to distort, sharpen and change the colors of your images. You can create special effects with your photos that would make for interesting viewing. This will definitely add spice to your website.

Tool # 3 – Adobe Acrobat

If you have word files, newsletters and white papers ready for download on your website, Adobe Acrobat can be your dear friend. Word and Excel files can be converted to Adobe PDF files for easier downloads by your website viewers.

Tool # 4 – Adobe Dreamweaver

This is the best tool while learning how to build a website with adobe because it is user-friendly and even novices can design their very own website using this software. There are some online guides and steps you can follow to design your website using the Dreamweaver. Another great thing about this software is that it supports various scripts and programming languages. Also, the reason why even novices can use this in designing their websites is that they don’t have to learn HTML or CSS codes to design their site. There is a Code Viewer for those who are familiar with codes but you can easily shift to the Design mode if you are not familiar with codes.

Tool # 5 – Adobe Flash

You can use flash to add animations to your website.

Tool # 6 – Adobe Fireworks

Adobe Fireworks is great for slicing images and creating backgrounds once the entire design has been completed. They are then made ready for coding

Tool # 7 – Adobe Premiere

Since you have started on how to build a website with adobe already, you might as well learn to make videos that you can later on upload to your site to make it even more interesting and attractive. Adobe Premiere is a great tool to make wonderful videos with great special effects and editing.

Your website is one of the best promotional tools in the world today. There are billions of people who rely on the internet for information, entertainment and communication. It is because of this that when you learn to build a website, you are actually advancing yourself in terms of advertising your business or getting your work out there as a freelancer. It is also a great way to share your advocacy or promote you special interests online.

If you want to learn to build a website, here are some quick tips and ideas you can use to help you get started:

- There are free web hosts that you can sign-up to while you are still starting out. Begin with a blog and start building traffic to your site.

- Provide interesting and relevant content. Your content may be in the form of articles, press releases or even pictures and flash animations. Whatever they are they should all be related to the overall theme of your website.

- Brainstorm on how you would like to present your website to the world. Choose color schemes, font styles, inter-change font and image sizes as well as choose a layout that is interesting but organized so your viewers will not get lost within your site. Also select the overall look you want to project.

- If you think you are ready to avail of paid web hosting service then do so. By being ready, you must have a certain budget and that you already have established a distinct look and purpose for your website. This is especially good for those who would like to use their site for their businesses.

- Choose an interesting domain name. Also, your web address should be easy to remember. As much as possible, do not hyphenate your address as most people do not tend to remember these symbols and they may be diverted to another site.

- Try to learn simple web designing programs. They are really not all that difficult to manipulate. When you do your own design instead of hiring a designer for you, you can implement the exact look you want your website to have. This is also an added skill for you and a cost effective measure you can take.

- If you are just a beginner, you may opt for free web design software programs and ready-made layouts available for download through the internet.

- Upload photos, videos and flash animations to spice up your website’s look.

- Create tags in your website. Tags are made up of keywords and key phrases that will tell something about the content of your website. This will make your website searchable in results through search engines. They help bring in traffic to your website.

- Promote your website by properly making links through other websites, social networking sites as well as letting your friends and family know that your site is already up. To learn to build a website does not end in the designing process. You must also effective promote and advertise yourself to the world.
